Memes are media artifiacts, used in many different ways, but importantly as an emotive posture, a signifier of being in-group. To be familiar with a meme is to claim affiliation or at least awareness of a community that uses the meme. But because these paths are circuitous and plural, the same meme could index different paths through different communities. Knowledge of a collection of memes is like having access to a family language- a microculture. Bad actors can abuse this- claim group affiliation via memes for the manipulation of those communities.
